The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas has urged students, youth, and women to showcase their talents , creativity and commitment to making a difference in the field of agriculture.

Professor Sagir made the call during the third open day organized by the Centre for Dryland Agriculture CDA , Bayero University Kano BUK.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics BUK, Professor Sani Muhammad-Gumel, Prof. Sagir Abbas explained that the CDA has launched agri-hacking 2.0 and supported twenty two communities with improved seeds to enhance food production.

 

He pointed out that the program will support new innovators who are ready to take their ideas to the next level to the minimum viable product stage.

The vice chancellor stressed that the initiative is not just a competition, but a platform to nurture talents drive, sustainable solutions and create wealth.
while addressing the critical environmental and socio-economic challenges faced by dryland regions.

The Director CDA, Prof Jibrin Mohammed-Jibrin, highlighted that the open day is an avenue for interaction between researchers and partners that creates an opportunity for networking between the centre and partners.

He said the centre supported twenty two adopted communities working with the centre with a variety of improved seeds to help address climate change among others.

“We will train them to become community seed producers and guide them to produce more seeds and at the end link them with seed companies to make more money”.

 

He maintained that the Centre for Dryland Agriculture CDA was established in 2012 to improve livelihoods, resilience and sustainable use of natural resources in African dry lands through training and demand-driven research.

Highlights of the event include a cash award of N30,000 to five junior staff, while other staff and students of the centre received certificates and plagues.

 

Radio Nigeria reports that the open day themed “Harvesting Knowledge, Nurturing Communities” featured an exhibition of farm products by farmers, food processing companies and relevant stakeholders.
