A bill proposing an amendment to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to establish Katagum State from the existing Bauchi State has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by a member representing Katagum in Bauchi State Alhaji Auwalu Abdu Gwalabe, debated on the floor of the house.

In his lead debate, Alhaji Auwalu Gwalabe, explained that the proposed Katagum State has a total land mass area of about 15 million square kilometers with projected population of
5 million people based on the 2008 census figures using the approved annual national population growth of 4.2%.

He said the proposed Katagum State is known for development and preservation of natural resources particularly solid and non-solid minerals, agricultural production capacity in cash crops, cereals, grains, and livestock for economic viability.

Alhaji Auwalu Gwalabe, however, confirmed that the creation of Katagum State Sate will meet the aspirations of both the Federal Government and that of his People towards enhancing security, balanced federal structure and social justice owing to its rich history and bright future.

The lawmaker maintained that, given the historical background of Katagum with its three first-class Emirs and their immense contribution to food production, accounting for nearly 45% of the state’s agriculture, creating Katagum State will enhance their capacity and bring the people closer to the government.

He further appealed to the lawmakers to support the bill, considering it a step towards achieving a more equitable Nigeria and enhancing the rich heritage of Katagum and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

After a debate, the Speaker has referred the Bill to the house committee on constitution review for further legislative considerations.

An investigation has revealed that the bill for the creation of Katagum State is the sixteenth proposal for new state formations submitted by lawmakers from different parts of the country and addressed during a plenary session of the House.
