Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council has decried the harsh economic strain being experienced by Nigerians.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of the council’s Congress over the weekend in Abuja.

It unequivocally frowned at the recent Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) price hike, noting that it has stretched household budgets to the breaking point, leading to the escalation of essential commodities that have gone beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians.

The Congress expressed deep concern on the rise of tuition fees in schools as many parents are now unable to keep their children in and seek for affordable alternatives.

It warns that failure to take concrete action will lead to a growing number of out-of-school children.

The communique also urges security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police, to quickly put measures in place towards combating the scourge of insecurity, particularly the notorious ‘one-chance’ crimes which is on the increase in the territory.

It noted with dismay annual flooding in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory has wreaked havoc—claiming lives, destroying property worth billions of naira, and leaving countless residents homeless.

To this end, it calls on the government to alleviate the suffering of victims and put up measures to avert future occurrence as well as take urgent sustainable action to cushion the hardship in the land.
