35 Persons Missing After Boats Collision In Zamfara

At least 35 people are missing after two boats collided on the Gummi River in Zamfara State.

One of the boats, carrying over 40 passengers, mostly farmers heading to their fields, capsized after the crash.

According to Vice Chairman of Boat Operators in Zamfara, Bello Abubakar, the boat was dangerously overloaded despite warnings.

He confirmed that the driver had been cautioned against proceeding with the excessive load but Passengers refused to disembark.

“One of the boats had developed problems mid-journey, and while another boat operator tried to help, the two vessels collided and sank.” He stated.

So far, only seven people have been rescued, with 35 still unaccounted for.

Witnesses, including Zayyanu Aliyu, revealed that the passengers included men, women, and children.

“They were warned about the overcrowded boat but refused to get off,” Aliyu noted.

One survivor, Murtala Sa’idu, shared his experience, saying, “I was saved, but over 30 others are still lost in the river.”

Commissioner of Police Zamfara state Command, CP Shehu Muhammad Dalijan who confirmed the incident said police and other security agencies including ASKARAWA and vigilantes are at the scene of the incident giving security cover and supporting searching mission for rescue.

“The incident is very unfortunate and regrettable, our men and other sister agencies are presently at the scene” CP Dalijan

The Coordinator Nigerian waterways in charge of Sokoto and Zamfara state, Bala Muhammad expressed dismay over the incident, saying disciplinary measures would be applied.

“Managing Director and Chief executive officer of the Nigeria Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr Bola Oyebamiji directed for the assessment visit to the town, so a delegation from NIWA will be in Gummi soon, but anyone found wanting will be made to face the law.” Engr Bala said.

Rescue teams and local experts are still actively searching the river for the missing persons as hopes dim for the missing farmers and their families anxiously await news.
