Nigeria Achieves Significant Progress in Combating Insecurity – Speaker Abbas

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Dr Abbas Tajuddeen says Nigeria has recoded significant progress in the fight against the myriads of insecurity despite numerous challenges.

He made the statement while addressing the lawmakers in his speech during a resumed plenary session at the Assembly complex in Abuja.

Dr Abbas Tajuddeen, who described security as top priority of the tenth Assembly especially in the north with the Armed forces operations successfully neutralizing over 150 terrorists and major bandits kingpins.

He said although the house cannot ignore the fact that some villages and communities have been attacked in Borno, Plateau, Katsina, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Zamfara States by the Boko Haram and bandits but the nation is still make a head way on the matter.

The Speaker who sympathized with the families of victims of criminal attacks appealed for proactive measures by the security agencies and intensified prayers from Nigerians to prevent future occurrence of the incidences.

On the economic sector the Speaker maintained that Nigeria has demonstrated resilience and potential for recovery despite inflationary pressures and a high cost of living the nation achieved 3.19% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2024.

He confirmed that the growth was realized amid challenging global economic environment and underscores the efforts to improve the economy While unemployment and currency depreciation remain the major sources of concern.

“International organisations like the IMF have acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy and improve fiscal stability, signalling optimism for sustainable growth in the coming years”

Dr Abbas Tajuddeen, however expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the Edo Governorship election urging the winner and the losers to work together to move the state forward.

He further lauded the security agencies for maintaining law and order throughout the process which led to the smooth conduct of the poll with Sen Monday Okpebholo and Mr Dennis Idahosa as Governor and Deputy Governor elect.
