The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas has expressed deep concern over the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, during a visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Vice President at the State House in Abuja, the Speaker explained that his visit was intended to express sympathy for the flood’s devastating impact.

Dr Abbas also revealed that both the National Assembly and the Presidency have developed strategies to provide relief to the flood victims.

“We have discussed extensively the situation of the people, particularly those affected by the flood in Maiduguri. Both the NASS and the Presidency will implement measures in the next few days to bring succour to the victims,” Abbas stated.

He announced that the Federal Government has earmarked 3 billion naira for flood relief efforts in Maiduguri.

When asked about ensuring the funds reach those in need, Abbas expressed confidence in Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum’s transparency.

“With a governor like Zulum, who is known for his transparency, I am sure whatever is provided by the Presidency will be judiciously distributed. I have no concerns in that regard,” Abbas assured.

The Speaker also highlighted similar flood incidents in other states, including his home state, Kaduna.

He disclosed that the government had taken measures to support flood victims in Kaduna by distributing palliatives and engaging the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“We are also working with the Governor of Niger State and other affected states to provide necessary assistance. The National Assembly is doing everything possible to support the states hit by flooding,” Abbas concluded.
