Nigerians have been warned against consumption of undercooked bush meat to prevent contracting the deadly monkey pox virus.

Dr Yusuf Muhammed, the President of the Association of Residents Doctors , University of Ilọrin Teaching Hospital (ARD-UITH) gave the warning while speaking with Newsmen in Ilorin.

He advised Nigerians to avoid contact with dead animals as much as possible.

Dr. Muhammed explained that monkey pox is a zoonotic disease that affects animals and can be transferred to humans.

He noted that the antibody that humans have may not be able to protect against monkey pox.

The ARD-UITH president described monkeypox as a viral disease related to the now-eradicated smallpox virus.

According to him, initial symptoms are typically flu-like; including fever, chills, exhaustion, headache and muscle weakness, often followed by a painful or itchy rash.

Dr Muhammed advised Nigerians to report suspected cases to the nearest health agencies for proper investigation and contact tracing.
