UNICEF Partners with Jigawa to Educate Citizens on Treeplanting

United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund UNICEF says it is supporting the Jigawa state government by providing resources to mobilize and educate people of the state on the importance of tree planting and the role that youth will play, being the leaders of tomorrow.

The Programme Specialist, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene WASH, UNICEF Field Office Kano Dr. Uba Lawai stated this during a tree planting by youths held in Sule-tankarkar local government area of Jigawa state to commemorate the 2024 International Youth Day.

 

He said, the Jigawa state government is leading the campaign and has provided the 1,500 trees to be planted in 3 local government areas.

He explained that, 100 youth were involved in the tree planting campaign exercise.

According to him, the tree planting campaign is a key approach to mitigating the effects of climate change, especially in the semi-arid areas of northern Jigawa where deforestation has severely affected the region.

 

Dr. Uba Lawal pointed out that, the campaign targets to plant 1,500 trees.

He notes that, 500 tress have already been planted in Babura local government area, and another 500 trees each will be planted in Maigatari and Sule Tankarkar local government areas of the state.

The Programme Specialist added that, youth are key to sustaining and nurturing the trees being planted as they are the foremost beneficiaries of a greener future.

“In apparent recognition of the importance of the tree planting campaign in mitigating the effects of Climate Change, the youth of Jigawa have decided to focus on tree planting to celebrate the International Youth Day”.
