Reps Withdraws Bill Criminalising Refusal To Recite Nat’l Anthem

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen has withdrawn the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislation.

The bill which generated a barrage of criticism by some Nigerians and activists prescribes a 10-year jail term, ₦5 million fine or both for those who refuse to recite the national anthem and pledge.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, Nigeria House of Representatives, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the decision “follows his extensive consultations with a broad range of stakeholders and a careful consideration of the nation’s current circumstances”.

The statement says, the Speaker acknowledges the significance of the concerns raised and the attention the Bill had garnered, “reaffirming that he will never support any action that might disrupt the peace and unity of our nation”.

Mr Krishi however called on the public to be notified of the withdrawal of the Counter Subversion Bill and other related ones introduced on July 23, 2024.
