Kwara Records Four Deaths From Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis

Kwara Government has confirmed the death of four people in Eruda community, as a result of food poisoning from and one death from gastroenteritis.

Dr. Amina El-Imam, the state Commissioner for Health stated while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin.

She said the entire health team of the Ministry visited the community following report of a family who lost a number of their relatives, after consumption of Lafun-Amala.

Dr .El-Imam said on getting to the community,  it was discovered that there was an instance of food poisoning where a 70 year old woman fell ill and died after consuming amala.

She explained that her son and grandkids also consumed the same food, fell ill and died, noting that they were taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, were they passed away.

Dr,El-Imam said that the Amala made from Lafun could have been responsible for the death.

The Commissioner noted that the people who consumed yam flour without Lafun were fine, while those who consumed the mixture of both Lafun and Amala mixture fell ill and eventually some of them died.

She said several others are making good recovery in hospitals where they are receiving treatment.

She maintained that personal and environmental hygiene of the area was not optimal, adding that arrangements have been put in place to ensure the disease is contained to the currently treated patients.
