Written by Yusuf Zubairu

Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the request of the State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct Local Government Election.

The State Commissioner of Information, youth, sports and culture Alhaji Sagir Musa Ahmed disclosed this to newsmen in Dutse shortly after the council meeting held at government house Dutse.

According to him, the Council’s decision is in line with Section 197 (I) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission Law No. 3 of 2012 (as amended), which give the Commission the mandate to conduct Local Government Councils elections for the offices of Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Councillor across the 27 LGAs of the state.

Sagir Musa Ahmed pointed out that the Council’s decision complies with the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s judgment on Local Government Councils, which states that all Local Government Areas in Nigeria must have democratically elected officials and that elections must be conducted in all states within three months.
