Kano Has Not Recorded Cholera Cases-Commissioner

 

The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, stated that the state has not recorded any cases of cholera.

During an interview with Radio Nigeria in Kano, Dr. Abubakar explained that there have been incidents of Gastroenteritis in the last few weeks.

“Gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection characterized by diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever”

Dr. Abubakar emphasized that cholera is a deadly disease characterized by diarrhea and vomiting, leading to dehydration and potential immediate death.

He highlighted that cholera is caused by poor hygiene in food, environment, and water.

The commissioner stressed the importance of sanitizing unprocessed foods, such as vegetables and fruits, avoiding open defecation, and boiling and filtering water.

“Especially stream water, shallow wells that are not well covered and people using rain water are at high risk of getting cholera”

The Commissioner pointed out that, the state government has set up an epidemic preparedness response EPR team in the last few months to Mitigate unforeseen circumstances.

“The EPR team discovered excessive heat and malaria as the major causes of the increasing number of deaths for no reason early this year as well as meningitis which is a seasonal infection”

Dr. Abubakar pointed out that, the state has engaged in enlightenment campaigns to inform the public about the outbreak and ways of reducing the spread
