IIIT, NUJ Organizes Training On Ethics of Journalism

A Non Governmental Organization, the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), have organized a one-day training for members of the pen profession in Kano state.

IIIT Coordinator Dr. Saidu Ahmad Dukawa represented by Mustapha Chinade said the essence was to build more capacity for journalists on responsible practice.

He reminded the practitioners that the society depends on them to know happenings which should be done factually and fairly.

“You need to do the work truthfully and remember that Allah is watching you and your affairs because you will be accountable for your actions.”

The Chairman NUJ Kano state Chapter Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, emphasized on the need to adhere to journalism code of ethics, upholding the truth and avoiding discrimination.

He reminded journalists of their responsibilities in society and the confidence of the people in them.

While presenting a paper, Dr. Ibrahim Siraj of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University Kano, identified ethics as the foundation of every profession, as it guides responsible and authentic practice.

He pointed out that journalists, need to be well guided as well as uphold truth, balance, fairness, objectivity, and good conduct in the practice.

Dr. Siraj emphasized that journalists should prioritize verifiable truth, especially as Muslims, where truth holds great significance.

“A commonly accepted definition of truth is that it represents objective reality.”

He urged practitioners to avoid bribery and corruption and to uphold a high level of professionalism.

The training, themed ‘Ethics of Journalism: Guide to Best Islamic Practice,’ gathered stakeholders and media practitioners to discuss professionalism and ethical conduct.
