Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has lauded the Supreme Court’s decision on local government autonomy, calling it a historic moment.
He stated this after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa Abuja.
He emphasized the ruling’s importance, following years of legislative attempts to achieve this autonomy.
Abbas expressed optimism about the future of local governments, noting that parliament members are pleased with the historic outcome.
He highlighted that the issue of local government autonomy has been a persistent topic in constitutional amendments by the National Assembly over the past two decades.
The ruling, he said, transforms an impossibility into reality, promising a future where local governments can operate independently and effectively, free from state governors’ interference.
