National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has began the review of the 2015 National Migration Policy.

The Federal Commissioner of the commission, Tijani Aliyu-Ahmed ,made this known in Kano, during the closing ceremony of the Zonal Capacity building workshop for stakeholders from the Northwest Zone.

Aliyu-Ahmed, represented by the Kano Field Coordinator, Hajiya Lubah Liman, said that the review was in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration(IOM) and also part of efforts to boost the immigration database.

Tijani Ahmed said that the review would also address the issues of migration through education, access to social care, and proper documentation of those going in and out of Nigeria, amongst other issues.

“All migration stakeholders are gathered to look into some of the issues and review the National Migration Policy because of changes that may have come up as a result of so many issues.

“Some migrants don’t know their rights.

“The policy will bring development to the country and would safeguard the migrants’ rights” Aliyu-Ahmed said

Also speaking, the IOM Consultant for Nigeria Migration Policy Review, Mr Emeka Chris-Obiezu, said the aim of the workshop was to ensure stakeholders in the Northwest actively engage in the process of the review.

“Participate in reviewing the context of the existing policy now in the light of the new dynamics of migration in Northwest.

“After we review and validate the policy, we will send it to the Federal Executive Council for approval then it will be an authoritative document to be used to govern migration in the country” Chris-Obiezu said.
