Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has responded to the Supreme Court’s decision to grant financial autonomy to local government councils in Nigeria.

In a discussion with State House Correspondents, Soludo expressed his respect for the Supreme Court as the final authority.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that local government autonomy resources were utilized for the benefit of the people.

According to him, “The Supreme Court is the highest authority, and its decisions are to be respected. I understand that the Governors’ Forum is convening to consider this judgment. While I haven’t had the opportunity to review the document myself, I strongly believe that resources should be directed towards reaching the grassroots and ensuring transparent use of public funds at all levels.”

Responding to President Bola Tinubu’s statement regarding access to resources by elected LGA chairmen, Soludo acknowledged the absence of local government elections in Anambra State for some time.

He highlighted his commitment to organizing these elections, expressing that the state has recently enacted the Independent Electoral Commission law and is establishing the necessary institutions to facilitate the process.

Furthermore, Soludo reaffirmed his dedication to establishing a democratic system at the local government level, stating, “I am a firm believer in a democratic system, and I am fully committed to this cause. I have made a clear pledge to this effect, and I intend to honor it.”

The Governor also emphasized Anambra’s efforts to ensure that local government resources directly benefit the grassroots, particularly in supporting teachers, pensioners, and primary health workers.
