Written by Basirat Memudu

Kaduna State government has urged Tax Administrators across the country to adopt best practices in tax administration to enhance efficiency and effectiveness particularly simplifying and harmonizing tax collection processes to reduce the burden on taxpayers and improve compliance.

Deputy Governor of the State, Dr Hadiza Balarabe stated this while declaring open a workshop for Tax collectors from the North West organized by the Join Tax Board held in Kaduna.

Dr Balarabe explained that, Nigeria is endowed with a robust legal framework for tax administration supporting system which provide a comprehensive structure to ensure efficiency and fairness to payers.

Dr Balarabe pointed out that, despite the strong legislative foundation, the nation faced numerous challenges that hinder the optimal performance of tax system.

“Among these challenges are the multiplicity of taxes, which creates confusion and burden for taxpayers; bad administration practices; the non-availability of a comprehensive database; and the pervasive issue of tax touting.

“The complex nature of Nigerian tax laws further complicates compliance, particularly with issues like the change of accounting dates and cessation. Moreover, the non-payment of tax refunds, lack of qualified tax personnel, and poor communication skills with taxpayers exacerbate these challenges. Inadequate staffing, insufficient training, and poor office accommodation in some cases also significantly undermine the effectiveness of our tax authorities.

“If Nigeria and in deed states are to survive, we must stop depending on oil. This brings greater responsibilities on the shoulders of our tax collectors.”

Dr Hadiza Balarabe stressed the need for the tax collector to take measures for prompt refunds of overpaid taxes in order to build trust and encourage voluntary compliance.

She also urged them to employ strict measures to deter corrupt practices among tax officials; and leveraging on modern technology which can make processes more transparent, efficient, and user-friendly.

According to her, Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) has taken a giant step in deploying digital technology in tax administration in the state.

The Deputy Governor, who commended the Joint Tax Board and all stakeholders for organizing the training encouraged all participants to engage actively during the training to learn, share experiences, and develop strategies that will strengthen tax systems.

In a remark, the Executive Chairman, Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Jerry Adams said the training program was designed to equip their tax officers with the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools to carry out their functions with utmost efficacy.

Mr Adams reminded the participants on the importance of their role as tax officers. “We are the custodians of the public trust, responsible for ensuring that all taxable entities fulfill their obligations.

“Our work directly impacts the government’s ability to provide essential services, build infrastructure, and foster economic growth.”

He maintained that, the complexities of tax administration demand continuous update of their skills, adding that, the training provides an excellent opportunity for the participants to learn from experts, share experiences, and adopt best practices in tax audit and investigation.

Mr Adams also emphasized the importance of collaboration and synergy among tax authorities in the North West region especially in working together to sharing information and supporting each other as part of effort to overcome common challenges and achieve collective goals.
