Play Crucial To Wholistic Child Development – UNICEF

United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has identified play as a major catalyst in physical, emotional and cognitive growth of children.

The Chief of Field Office UNICEF Kano Mr. Rahma Rihood Mohammad Farah, stated this during the commemoration of the first international day of play (IDOP), held at Kwalli special primary school, Kano municipal local government area.

According to him, the United Nations recognized and designated the international day that will be celebrated around the world to recognized the right of the child to play which is enshrined in the international conventions of the rights of a child.

He explained that play is very important as it enhances children’s educational attainment and shaping their future.

Mr. Rahma pointed out that, play is an important element of development which paves way for children to grow, be happy, creative and good members of the society.

“All the parents, Community leaders and government need to recognize and appreciate this day and right to play because we all know now that play makes children to grow. It’s is part of their physical, emotional and cognitive growth.

The state Commissioner of Education, Umar Doguwa represented by the Deputy Director of NGOs Yusuf Sani, commended UNICEF for their support and collaboration to improve learning in Kano schools.

In her remarks, Head mistress of the school, Hassana Aminu expressed happiness over the event,  saying that a child understands faster when it is joined with play.

“It is easy to implement teaching with play once it concern children. This is a welcome development because play makes a child happy and he becomes interested in what ever you are teaching him/her,” she stressed.

Radio Nigeria reports that after a brief play, both pupils and the school management were presented with items such as building blocks, toys, learning aids among others.
